Happiness at the Garage Sale

OpinionsThe 2007 Richmond Garage Sale, was exactly what it should always be, a community coming together to celebrate the rites of spring.

Eve and I donated a few pieces of furniture to a neighbor who was organizing a yard sale. The did an improptu setup from their home as they were not prepared enough for the planning stages that went into getting on the official town list.

But that was part of the fun and part of the spirit of the entire day. People stopped in, clutching their official list of sales in their hand, happy that they had discovered something new and "undesturbed."

My greatest pleasure was is watching neighbors that I had never seen before, picking though piles, trying to find a treasure that they could call their own.

There are lost of families out there, in need of making their house feel more like a home.

A garage sale offers a chance for neighbors to get to know one another, for all of us to shake the dust off of our souls as we reemerge from the winter slumber. But never forget that a garage sale also offers people of modest income (and all -- actually) a chance to buy previiously loved items at rock bottom prices, instead of picking through curb-side-castaways.

Dignity maintained!
