Our speaker will be Dr. Alan K. Betts, president of the Vermont Academy of Science & Engineering and a climate scientist at Atmospheric Research in Pittsford. Dr. Betts was recently asked to share his insights on global warming as well as its consequences and possible solutions with the Vermont Legislature and he gave a captivating presentation to a standing-room-only audience. His scientific credentials include bachelor’s and honorary master’s degrees in natural sciences from Peterhouse, Cambridge, England, and a Ph. D. in meteorology from Imperial College, London. He is a fellow of the American Meteorological Society, the American Geophysical Union, the Royal Meteorological Society and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

Dr. Betts has spent his career studying weather and climate around the world, most recently concentrating on global warming, its impacts and how individuals and societies can start reversing the trends. He is author or co-author of more than 135 reviewed papers in scientific journals, with a focus on tropical weather dynamics, cloud thermodynamics and atmospheric convection. He also played an important role in evaluating and developing the global forecast model used at the European Weather Centre, which is widely held to be the best global analysis and forecast system.
