Late 2001: I leave the theatre after seeing David Lynch’s latest film, Mullholland drive… I am Astonished. I had been a fan for a while, but Mullholland was the first Lynch film I saw on the big screen, and it was a strange and wonderful experience.
2002: I waited for a new David Lynch movie, and re-watched some old ones.
2003: I waited. I re-watched. Plus some other stuff.
2004: After searching the internet at least once a month over three years for any David Lynch news, I finally got some. Lynch was working on a new film, in fact, he was already a year into it‘s production, but because he had discovered digital video, he was spending all his time shooting and shooting and editing and editing. All the enigmatic genius would say about his new film was this: “It‘s about a woman in trouble.”
2005: After two years of production, Inland Empire, as it has been named, is rumored to be appearing at the ’05 Cannes film festival. “its only a matter of time before it comes to Vermont!” I said, licking my lips. Cannes came and went, no Inland Empire.
2006: This time, I was sure. Cannes would feature Inland Empire. I was wrong. Finally, out of the ashes of my Cannes disappointment, came the wonderful news that The Venice film festival had confirmed that they were going to feature… bumbadadaaaaaa… Inland Empire. Now, how long doest it take a movie Like Inland Empire to make it from its first showing, all the way to Vermont?
2007: Inland Empire has had 29 openings across the planet and its still not showing in Vermont. We even have a theatre called the Roxy that specializes is off beat and foreign films, so why no Inland Empire?
March 22, 2007. I am sitting at work. I have made calls and found someone to cover the last few hours of my shift, because tonight, at 8 pm, at the palace nine on Shelburne rd in Burlington, I will be watching… some movie, I forget what it is. Oh, yea, inland empire!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 3 hours of Lynchy goodness, and I can’t wait. I hope to have a full review for you in the next issue of The Mountain Gazette.
