Huntington Gorge Part II

I do not oppose to making a situation safer...
That said, should we fill in the ocean? Should be blow up Niagara Falls? I am not trying to cause a fight. I simply want to know where the line is drawn? From George Bailston. Huntington Gorge Part II

It's a very good question. Clearly, there is something about this spot that fools people into thinking they're safe when they're not. Just as we warn people about bumps in the road or places where deer cross, we should do something to warn people that this spot is not as safe as it appears.
The current signs are not even close to strong enough, in my opinion. It's easy to get to the falls without even seeing them, and the warning is actutally on the back of the sign. And who reads historic markers anyway? ( I do, but that's not the point). The very least that should be done is to have a very large and prominent sign anchored to the rocks right above the falls themselves. That way, anyone getting close to the dangerous spot would have to see the sign. Huntington Gorge Part II

Well it took millions of years for the water to carve such a beautifull setting. Some folks want to blow it up, fill it in and undue that beauty in the span of a few days.
Then I guess it will be so ugly and safe that the morons you are trying to protect will be force to find some other place to harm themselves. Seems like a waste that nature looses out because of the obtuseness of a few people. Can you imagine if the Grand Canyon was obliterated because people deemed it unsafe? Lets remove all the signs make a bigger parking area and use this as a way to clean out the gene pool. Huntington Gorge Part II

I've been going to Huntington Gorge all my life and I'm convinced that the people that get hurt are the people that don't know what they are doing. To say that anyone that swims there is a moron is obtuse at best. 28 years and I have never even had a scary incident there..
Here's an idea tho.. how about on these proposed signs we have different warning levels.. clearly when the water is higher the area is more dangerous, someone new to the area has no idea whether the water is high or low as compared to usual. It seems to me the majority of the drownings have been early season when the water is very high, or after a heavy rain.. |

Signs won't save everyone, but if they are placed in the river where waders can see them, they might do more good.
The real answer is to destroy the area's beauty. Blow it up, divert the stream, run a big culvert over it, do whatever you must to make the area ugly and unattractive. It appears that we care more about beauty than human life, so this will never happen.
