Alternative Fuel and Grain

Green LivingA while back I commented about international grain production and the desire to keep pace with demand.

The article, located here http://www.myrichmondvt.com/article.php/grain_troubles

Outlines a primary question I have about grain for food versus increase in grain demand for fuel.

Well, it seems like VPR is hot on the trail. Yesterday they played a story about how increase demand for grain as fuel WILL increase the cost of grain.

This in turn impacts feed for cattle wich WILL increase the cost of meat by as much as 30% and maybe higher.

So, the real question is, what can be used for bio-diesal, ethanol and other fuels that DO NOT have an impact on the family table.

It also makes me wonder if there is a rotting surplus of these grains somewhere, if there is -- will it be enough to use as fuel, and if not -- what lobbyists are pushing this through.

We need an alternative to oil, but one that wont put us in harms way... any thoughts?

I am not certain if this is rumor, but I heard it takes more energy to produce the ethanol additive made from corn than it produces.

So if that is true, it creates a false sense of benefit.

Not withstanding THAT possibility, keep in mind that global weather conditions, famine, etcetera, will cause significant market fluctuations with this fuel source.

And back to Bryan's thought about influencing the battle of food over fuel.

Well, I guess whichever brings more dollars to the table wins. So if food brings more dollars, then the agriculture aspect will feed the world. If fuel wins, then does everyone starve?

This is food for pondering.
