Richmond NewsWow - the metal truss bridge on Bridge St. has been posted for 3 whole days an no comments here?

The newspaper reports talk about the lower weight posting being "inconvenient". What an understatement!
This affects not only our town, but Huntington and beyond. A few years ago a survey showed that over 4,000 people pass ove that bridge every day. Not all of those people are from Richmond.
The trucks that can't cross the river are just the start of it. Think of all the businesses that will be affected. The home supply, farms, fire and rescue (don't have a heart attack!), delivery vans and school buses. You will be affected, too, since this will result in higher prices for everyone!
They actually sent school buses up Kenyon Road last Friday! Do you want to see them do that all winter?
Many roads, such as Cemetery Road, Hillview and East Hill Road will see greatly increased traffic - especially trucks as they look for alternate routes.
This is not something that can be fixed quickly - think of how long it took to get the Jonesville Bridge repaired!
Think about how this will affect you and help urge the Selectboard to find a solution quickly (like a temporary bridge) so we can at least be ready for the next school year.

Help work on the town plan to make infrastructure repair and maintenance a priority instead of emergency response!
Infrastructure includes sidewalks as well as the roads.

it's interesting...the traffic light is great during rush hour too!

This is really a BIG problem. As I am told, this is not scheduled to be fixed for about 5 year.

Lets fix it now!

This will be horrible once school starts again.

Who can address this?

The light queues up all the traffic and then they all go over the bridge at the same time! Who is the genius that thought that would be better (less stressful on the bridge) than letting them just go as they come?
Mount a radar camera on the Bridge and the speeding tickets will pay for the new bridge.
How about a covered bridge? I would donate and volunteer, for that- Im sure Im not alone. Could be preserved and maintained by a non-profit covered bridge commitee?
There are plenty of covered bridges around that have lasted longer than the concrete/steel bridges that the town is obviosly incapable of maintaining.

An interesting idea - a covered bridge.

People should pay attention to the selectboard calendar and go to public hearings to review bridge plans. I heard from a town source that the AOT is saying a new bridge would require a center pier. That will cause all sorts of issues with erosion and fishing. Just ask a local fisherman what happens when a pier is put in a river.

The public needs to keep pressure on the board to work towards a quick solution. This is a vital link in our community and affects our businesses and our neighbors. The traffic patterns will change and we will all feel the effects.

The key is public participation throughout the process. We can't just sit home and complain.

A few people have been asking the board for years to start putting money aside to fix the bridge. Because it was a small contingent - the board did little to prepare for this.

The bridges built after the 1927 floods are all reaching the limits of their useful lives. It should be no surprise that this one has reached its limit, too.

How nice would that be! Now if we could just convince people to go back to horses and buggies.....imagine what we'd save on paving if we just went back to dirt roads......

The pillar discussion is absolutely ridiculous. That can be spanned. Next thing you know someone is going to propose a ferry! How about a dam? Tunnel? Log Jam? Paddle boat rental at RHS?

Well, it looks like there is good news as the bridge will be repaired.

Shouldn't the town start seriously considering a fund for future reparations of the infrastructure. We cannot allow this potential detriment to go unheeded. Have we learned our lesson?
