Congratulations to Lance Armstrong for another spectacular achievement. But I have to say that I was a bit disappointed this past Sunday that none of the major networks bothered to cover the finale of Lance's amazing feat. The race has 21 stages and the cyclists ride over 2000 miles through some of the steepest sections of the alps.
Winning what has to be one of the most grueling bike races once, is an amazing accomplishment. Doing it 7 times in a row is unthinkable. Now I know the media was tripping over themselves to interview him afterwards, and did many feel good stories about how he battled cancer and never gave up. But it would have been nice to see some footage of historic effort unfold.
Perhaps it is not mainstream enough to broadcast across the USA, but I would have to think it was more exciting then watching Golf, and I happen to like golf. What is it with our national networks that they think we only want the Readers Digest condensed version of things. As we live so close to Canada I often find their coverage of the Olympics or other world events better.
Why? Because they actually cover it. They don't boil it down into a 2 minute story, slap some feel good music on it and get Bob Costas to do a sappy voice over. That's not coverage, it's an embarrassment. Hundreds of thousands of people flock to France to cheer on cyclists from all over the world for this event. The problem is that there are so many angles making this a great news story, that our media forgot to show the event.
Can you imagine just showing Tiger Woods accepting the trophy after winning the British Open? Or how about the Red Sox celebrating after winning the World Series, but not showing the actual Games? It's sort of like that, I am not even a Red Sox fan, but I was routing for them and glued to my TV to see if they could pull it off.
Anyway, I am sure I will get over it. I just hate being fed recycled stories, I guess because it means that somebody else is deciding what is important for us to see.
