Re-Green-Up Day

General NewsNow summer is in full swing, I have been riding my bike more lately in the Hinesburg - Richmond area. While taking in all the beauty that the area offers, it is hard not to notice the garbage that is scattered along the road side.

What is going through someone's head when they are chucking garbage out their car window? We may never know that answer, but I was wondering if our towns should consider doing another Green-up day.

I and thousands of folks across Vermont turned out to clean up our roads in May during the annual Green-Up Day. Well maybe once time isn't enough and since tourism is one of the bigger revenue streams our state has, I think it is important to keep Vermont looking nice.

I would volunteer for another Green-Up Day, would you?

The real question Jim, is how do we go about organizing such a task.

I do not know much about that type of endeavor. Are there people to talk with, is it completely grass-roots, or is it something else entirely?

My biggest fear is apathy. Even for the events in the Green, the park, the river, you name it. People are not becomming as engaged in the system as they once were.

So how would something like this come about?

I not exactly sure how to organize it as well. But I guess if enough folks were interested I would start by contacting the town clerks office and speak with the man or woman who organizes the event that happens in May.

They would have a good idea of what it takes to pull together a second Green-Up Day. Perhaps it does not have to be state-wide, each town can do what they choose.

I think I will call them today to see what I can learn.

Every year, usually on the first Saturday in May, the Richmond Conservation Commission organizes scores (if not hundreds) of volunteers to pick up trash as part of the statewide Green Up Day. There's probably someone in your neighborhood in charge of coordinating local volunteers. The Conservation Commission chair, Alison Anand, could put you in touch. Her number is 434-2311.

Lobbying for higher deposits on beverage containers would help, too. The current nickel rate was set a long time ago, when a nickel was worth a lot more.
