Best Swimming Holes?
Authored by: Anonymous on Monday, August 15 2005 @ 10:22 AM EDT
i think that the huntington gorge is in general a very good swiming hole. The gorge is only one part of the river and the swiming higher up the river is very good. As when swimming anywhere you want to avoid a swimming hole after rain or to early in the season. I also want to point out that most of the people who die there have been drinking or swimming at an unsafe time. (like right after a rain storm)

People certainly love to protect their swimming holes, but here are two right off the bat...
SAFE UNDER MOST CONDITION:
Across from the Audobon center there are paths that lead to streams. Good wading, don't go anywhere right after heavey rains though. The only thing that you may not like about this is that it is a hike away from people and therefore may not be preferable if you want to be within eyesight or shouting distance from people.
A LITTLE RISKIER:
Bolton Pot Holes. It is a rocky ledge, at the bottom of the Bolton Ski resort road that creates buckets and waterfalls.
You can tell your aunt 2 things. First, there are usually a few people there on any given day and secondly, it is safer than Huntington Gorge, within reason.
DO NOT GO if it has rained within the last 24 hours. I say this because the water that comes down is straight from atop the mountain. If the water is rushing down and collecting as it travels, it makes for dangerous conditions.
People have gotten hurt here, so be careful. Do not dive in, do not jump from severe heights, and if the water looks treacherous, it is. Other than that, I'd say go with a friend or even your aunt and uncle. It is a pretty easy walk in.
It is on the right hand side of the road as you are facing up the mountain. Plenty of paths exist.
As always, be careful and try not to go without someone else present.
With all swimming holes, practice safety first and most importantly, when you swim, you do so at your own risk. Even experienced swimmers can get into trouble fast!
